In the spirit of my recent gourd theme, I would like to share with you 5 great things you can make with gourds. This is certainly not the end of what you can do with gourd art but it can give you a great start when it comes to ideas.

1. Table Centerpiece or Setting- You can created a fabulous table setting using dried, decorated gourds. This would be an especially great idea around Thanksgiving but anytime of the year is great as well.

2. Birdhouses- You can create bird house gourds for small birds out of large, dried gourd shells. Additionally, you can also make bird feeders in almost the same way. These are great for small birds to perch on and make a great addition to your garden or porch or in front of a window in your home so you can watch the birds come explore your birdhouse gourd or bird feeder.

3. Dippers and Bowls- You can use dried gourds to make decorative dippers and bowls that will look great on your fall table or anytime of year.

4. Musical Instrument- You can make a musical instrument (such as maracas or shakers) out of filled dried gourds. Children especially like this craft idea and find it great fun to make musical instruments and decorate it themselves.

5. Decorate it- My favorite thing to do with gourds is to decorate it and display it as art. There is literally no end to the great ideas and creations you can come up with. You can go wherever your imagination takes you.

There are so many different types of gourd art. You can really have a great time painting, carving and designing gourds of all shapes and sizes.

If you’ve never heard of it, gourd art is the practice of creating works of art on dried gourd shells. This art is based on a technique called pointillism. It’s a very interesting and creative type of work and I’ve have the fortunate experience of meeting a gourd artist.

In gourd art, the surface of the gourd may be burned, sanded, carved, dyed or polished to create a different look as well as to be able to paint and otherwise decorate the gourd. If you don’t want to prepare them yourself, you can purchase those that are already cleaned, smoothed and prepared for creating fine art gourds.

This is similar to or a type of pyrography. Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks. These burn marks are done intentionally with a hot object such as a poker. You may have also heard of it called pokerwork or wood burning.

When it comes to decorating gourds, there is no end to what can be created. There are as many types of artists as there are types of gourds and what they do with this craft is astounding. Gourd art is no longer considered just a craft but an actual art form that is featured in museums across the world.

In addition to the actual art and design that is made on the gourd itself, people are also stretching their imaginations and doing many other great things with gourd art. For example, they are making bird houses, bird feeders and many other creative things from gourds.

The best part about of using gourds for art is that anyone can do it. Even if you didn’t know what a gourd was before this, you can decorate your own special creation.

Purple Martins, aerobatic masters of the sky, have held a special place in the hearts and minds of many people for a very long time. The bond between these beautiful birds and humankind, established centuries ago, has grown ever stronger during that time. In fact, Purple Martins that nest east of the Rocky Mountains are almost completely dependent upon people to provide housing.

Purple Martin birdhouses of various shapes, colors, and designs stand proudly in backyards, parks, and golf courses all over the eastern U.S. and Canada.

Unfortunately, for many new to landlording, attracting Purple Martins is exceedingly difficult. There are a few important tips and techniques that can make the task a bit easier, but ultimately, patience and consistency are the key ingredients to a successful martin colony. With that in mind, let’s explore a few of those tips, including birdhouse location, controlling predators and competitors, and some additional tools that can improve your results.

Purple Martin Real Estate

They say the three rules of real estate are "location, location, location." The same holds true when putting up a birdhouse. Different birds have different preferences for nesting locations, so to attract Purple Martins, give them what they want. The birdhouse should be placed at least thirty feet from human housing. Do not put it more than 120 feet away, though – Purple Martins have come to associate people with protection, so they do not want to be too far away.

These birds are amazing flyers capable of spectacular aerial feats; however, they require a direct flight path into their birdhouse, so make sure you place your Purple Martin birdhouse at least forty feet away from any trees that are taller than the birdhouse. How high above ground should the birdhouse be? The answer to that question is from ten to twenty feet. Most mounting poles specifically designed for Purple Martin houses will top out at twelve to fifteen feet, which is considered by most experts to be the optimum height.

There are two other considerations concerning the location of your birdhouse. First, there should be a source of water nearby. What’s that? You haven’t moved into your fancy lake house yet? As long as the martins can find water within a few miles, it is okay, whether it is a lake, river, pond, or even a surface well like those provided for cattle.

The other important thing to mention is that we are talking about Purple Martins that nest east of the Rocky Mountains. There is a sub-species of martin that lives in parts of the desert Southwest, and another along the Pacific coast, but they nest in their ancestral ways, in abandoned woodpecker holes and other natural cavities. The Pacific coast sub-species is beginning to use Purple Martin gourds and single-unit birdhouses.

Controlling Predators and Competitors

Other cavity nesting birds may compete with Purple Martins for your birdhouse. If you find Tree Swallows or Bluebirds trying to nest within, you should put up a birdhouse specifically for them, and move their nest. It is a violation of federal law to harm our native birds, so no aggressive action is to be taken.

The same cannot be said for non-native birds, like English House Sparrows and European Starlings. You may use deadly force to control these birds, so long as you do not violate other local laws. For instance, it may not be a good idea to unload on them with a hunting rifle; your neighbors will not appreciate it, and your expensive Purple Martin birdhouse will be full of holes (unless you shoot as badly as I do).

Unfortunately, sometimes predator species like hawks and owls may attack your Purple Martin colony. It is a part of the circle of life, as they say. Many birdhouses can be purchased with attachable owl guards, and the nesting compartments are usually sufficiently deep to provide a measure of protection.

A Little Extra Help

Over the years, Purple Martin experts developed some tools that may be great aids in attracting the oft-beloved birds. The dawn song of the Purple Martin, sung in spring as the birds circle overhead or perch nearby, is an effective attractant. You may try to learn how to sing like a martin, but your success is doubtful, and your family may worry for your sanity. Instead, buy a specially recorded CD, and play it in the early morning hours in spring.

Another helpful and clever resource is the Purple Martin decoy. These wooden or plastic look-alikes are placed on the birdhouse or on perches attached to the birdhouse. Since Purple Martins are gregarious birds, they may well stop by to say hello.

In conclusion, I must again emphasize the importance of the location of your new Purple Martin birdhouse. It must be near – but not too near – your own house, and away from trees. When dealing with other bird species, be a competitor with the predators (owls, hawks, etc.), and be a predator of non-native competitors (English House Sparrows and European Starlings). Avail yourself of whatever help you can find, including products such as audio recordings of Purple Martin vocalizations and decoys. Finally, I will offer two words that many Purple Martin landlords find are crucial to their success: Be patient!

It can be done though, and in fact, it is vital that it be done, as safe housing is absolutely essential to the survival of the purple martin – especially in the United States and Canada.

1. People who are new at this tend to believe that putting up the bird house just before their seasonal arrival should suffice. However, this isn’t totally true. Adult martin will very rarely give up a residence they have already settled in to.

Young martins just finding their wings, are more likely to be the ones searching for a nice place to live. But it is essential to realize that they won’t begin showing up until about 30 days after their full adult counterparts.

2. So be sure to put up your new residence within that time frame. Also keep in mind that it also can take several seasons to establish a healthy colony. Patience is a requirement here.

First of all: What is a gourd? The simple answer is that a gourd is a vegetable related to pumpkins and squash and when dried has a shell that is dense and hard.

You are probably wondering why you would want to do anything with a gourd anyway. Another simple answer: Because it is so much fun!

The extensive varieties and different shapes available allow for endless possibilities for the crafter to unleash their creativity.

Gourds can be useful, decorative, or both. They can be compared to a wood product, and the same type of tools, hardware and stains or finishes used for wood can be applied to gourds. I was asked the other day, ‘Where do you buy gourds? And when you talk about cleaning them, what does that involve?’ Oh, yeah, not everyone knows about this stuff. Funny how you forget that at one time, you yourself were asking the very same questions! And gee, these questions were nicely timed, as it’s the natural next step to talk about gourds.

You can either grow your own gourds; purchase them from the local farm market (usually fresh and you would have to dry them) or over the Internet from a gourd farmer. My two favorite places to purchase gourds are Mojave Gourd Farm in California and Foothill Farms in Ohio.

Why two? Mojave Gourd Farm offers gourds by the box. They usually offer two types of boxes with varying amounts and shapes of gourds for a nice price. I get a whole box of characters and personalities to create with! When I need a particular type of gourd in a small quantity the place I like to get them is at Foothill Farms I just love the Internet and modern technology.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. I intend on growing some of my very own gourds next year. I received lots of tips when I attended the Ohio Gourd Show and am I excited to put them to the test! Oh and you bet, I’ll be blogging about that.

Now the next question was "and when you talk about cleaning them, what does that involve?’ You know you are a true lover of gourds if cleaning them is nothing but a thing. What happens in the morphing process of a gourd from fresh to dry is it loses its water weight. This process takes about six to nine months. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t mind shrinking that much in that short amount of time!

During this process the water evaporates through the gourd’s skin and forms mold. Okay, maybe that wouldn’t be a good process for a human to lose weight. Can you imagine? ‘Oh look, Tracy, you’ve got a nice coating of mold on you! How much longer do have to go?’ When the process is complete, you have a dried gourd with a moldy residue on it. This must be cleaned off to reveal the wonderful golden color and markings underneath.

I’ve noticed that how easily it cleans depends upon where it’s been grown. This is not based on any scientific fact. This is from my own personal experience. Those desert gourds require a bit more elbow grease than the Ohio grown ones. Now my Mom, who orders gourds from the same place, has managed to get ‘easy’ cleaning gourds. I think the difference there is that she has 19 more years of ‘cleaning’ muscle built up than I do. I know she could beat me at thumb wrestling.

To clean the outside of your gourd you can use some different methods:

Soak the gourds in water and a bit of bleach. Gourds float so it’s important to lay a wet towel over the top of them. After a few hours, wash them with a copper scrubby.

Soak the gourds in plain water and continue as above.

Do not soak the gourds and immediately start scrubbing with dish soap and copper scrubby. Can you tell I get impatient?

And my personal favorite for those desert gourds (and I have to give credit where credit is due, this was suggested by Janice Maloney from Mojave Gourd Farm) spray the gourd with Dawn Power Dissolver. After about half an hour they are ready for the copper scrubby. Sometimes you have to do it twice before you’re finished. There are places that offer to clean the outside of your go 1ff8 urds but you pay extra for that service.

Now the next step is to clean the inside, which wholly depends upon what you are creating. There are various schools of thought on this. Some folks believe that the inside must be cleaned out no matter what and others say ‘not’. I usually go with the first method, but have since learned that it wasn’t necessary. I’m still feeling my way on that one. There are two methods to accomplishing this fun task, dry or wet. Wet cleaning just about eliminates the dust, but I think it takes longer so I usually don’t do this. When the mood strikes, I want to work on the gourd as soon as possible.

When you open up a gourd the first thing you realize is that this is what underneath all that wrapping on a mummified person must smell like. Also, if you happen to have your mouth hanging open (as I catch myself doing often) you can get the nastiest taste in it. It takes several glasses of water, candy, ice cream, or chocolate to get rid of it.

Inside the gourd is a large ball that holds all the seeds along with membrane sticking to the sides of the gourd. If your really lucky, you’ll get a gourd where the membrane ball simply falls out and there isn’t any sticking to the sides. I’m warning you though; these are the really nasty dusty ones!

To wet clean this, I would take out the seed ball and then fill the gourd with water and let it soak. I’ve let them soak from a few hours to overnight depending on how patient I want to be about it. After they’ve soaked, the membrane is very soft and can be scraped out with a sharp edged spoon or a gourd scraping tool. Be warned! Cleaning out wet membranes is a messy and goopy job.

My preferred method is the dry method. Now I started out doing this with a spoon or any sharp object I could find until I bought my scrapers. Then, the Gourd Gods smiled upon all their people and someone invented The Gourd Genie. I love this tool!

This neat device fits into your drill (or your husband’s drill which suddenly has a new home in YOUR Lair. It becomes yours due to squatter’s rights). This neat tool scrubs out all that membrane very quickly! I can’t imagine life with out it. Well yes I can because the first one I bought broke. That’s how I found out what it’s made out of! It’s a golf ball covered with grit (like sandpaper grit) attached to a metal shaft. How simple is that? I really missed having it and it wasn’t long before I bought a replacement.

It is very important to clean your gourds in a well-ventilated area and to wear a mask! I didn’t listen (and still sometimes don’t) and ended up with a reaction to the gourd dust. It’s not fun! For me the result can be as severe as an intense ragweed allergy attack with a nice dash of bronchitis added on top. Gourd dust is nasty, nasty, nasty stuff. I highly recommend a mask. I started out with a mask from Home Depot that has the cartridges on it. Yes, I looked much like Darth Gourdess, which was most fun. ‘Gourd…. Gourd…. come to the dark side….’

I usually wear a blue disposable one for fine dust and so far so good. I clean my gourds outside whenever possible. If I can’t, I have a fan in the window of my Lair set on ‘exhaust’.

There you have it, where to buy your gourds and how to give them a bath. The fascinating thing about cleaning gourds is finding out what’s underneath that mold and dirt. Some of the most interesting pictures spring forth in the markings. It’s like finding the hidden message or the diamond hidden under the coal.

Like the squash, gourds are abundant during Halloween season, which is from mid-October to early November. These fruits are commonly used as hollowed-out bowls or cups or other dried home decors such as organic bird houses.

Gourd bird houses are very simple to create. Even small children are capable of making these homes for birds. If you are new to making gourd bird houses, just follow these simple steps and you will soon have your own gourd bird house.

1. Select a gourd. Gourds come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Choose the right size for the species of bird that you want to house. Typically, the larger the gourd, the better bird house it will make.

2. Upon choosing your gourd, cut out a hole from the side. It is important to do this when the gourd has not dried up yet. This hole will serve as the entryway of your gourd bird house.

3. Carefully take out the fleshy part of the gourd. This process requires a lot of concentration. Make sure you do not puncture the walls of the gourd. You may find it helpful to use some tools for carving out your gourd. The best equipment to use for this would be your regular scissors, tweezers, or even small spoons.

4. If you want to add a roost, gently carve out a smaller hole under the entryway, and insert a stick or branch through this hole. If you have a hard time creating a hole, you can slit short perpendicular lines instead, resembling a cross, and you can also push your stick or branch through this opening. Either method will work just as well.

5. Let your gourd bird house dry up. Once dry, you can put it up anywhere in your garden and soon, you will be rewarded by the sight of birds landing and resting on your new gourd bird house.

Birds actually will prefer to nest in a gourd over a manufactured birdhouse. The inside of the gourd, if some of the dried material and seeds are left, provides some nesting material and is much more natural than a plastic or resin type birdhouse.

Gourds can make very decorative birdhouses. They can be left natural by just cleaning off the loose skin and sanding the outside to make a very attractive rustic type birdhouse. On the other hand, gourds are very easy to decorate in just about any way that suits your fancy. Many artists love to work with gourds and designs can be handpainted on them, or by using woodburning tools, many beautiful decorations can be added to the gourds.

Birdhouse gourds are really very easy to grow and a lot of fun to decorate. Just one plant can produce 10 to 20 gourds in a nice variety of sizes and shapes. Keep in mind, though, that these are big gourds and grow on a fairly large vine, so you will need to have some space to grow them successfully. They grow quite well up a fence or arbor which would save some ground space.

Gourds are harvested in the fall after the vines have died down. They need to be stored in a dry area and left to finish drying and curing. This usually takes several months and you can tell when they are ready by shaking the gourd. If you can hear dry seeds rattling inside, they are cured and ready to be made into a birdhouse.
